nanshe-of-nina:WOMEN’S HISTORY † ADÈLE DE CHAMPAGNE (c. 1140 – 4 June 1206)Adèle de Champagne was a daughter of Thibaut IV de Blois, comte de Champagne and Mathilde von Spanheim. Her paternal uncle was Stephen I of England and she was named after her grandmother, Adèle de Normandie. In 1160, Adèle married Louis VII de France, five weeks after Louis’ previous, wife, Constanza, died in childbirth. Adèle and Louis had two children: a son and heir, Louis-Auguste and a daughter, Agnès. In 1180, Louis died and Philippe married Isabelle de Hainaut and Agnès was promised to Alexios II Komnēnos. Adèle was not fond of her new daughter-in-law, because Isabelle had previously been promised to Adèle’s nephew, Henri II de Champagne (son of Adèle’s brother, Henri Ier de Champagne and half-sister, Marie). Adèle acted as regent while Philippe went on the Third Crusade, but retired after his return and limited herself to funding abbeys. -- source link
