In case you do not know what a widow looks like, fol. 120v of Ms. Codex 198 has you covered. This section of the prose Speculum Vitae concerns widowhood as a possible condition for chastity, and although it pains me to admit it, that widow is not named Paul– that is of course a reference to Paul the Apostle, whose recommendation in 1 Corinthians 7:9 is one of the Middle Ages’ very favorite Bible verses. You can see it here in the text, rubricated and indicated by the “Paulus” on the left margin; melius est enim nubere quam uri, that is, it is better to marry than to burn. A convenient piece of advice!Manuscript description and digital images can be found here at OPenn. -- source link
