This is Pantanal national park in Brazil, although some parts extend into eastern Bolivia and Western Paraguay. It is one of the world’s largest wetland areas covering 140,000 square kilometres. In the wet season over 80% of the area becomes submerged with water leaving magnificent lagoons dotted amongst elevated forest, as in this photo. These wetlands are created by the flooding of the river Paraguai and its many tributaries. The flooding nurtures the world’s richest collections of aquatic plants, making Pantanal one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. You can find over 3,500 species of plants, 80 species of reptiles; 100 species of mammals and over 650 species of birds here. -Jean Photo courtesy of: Joel Sartore, National GeographicFor more information, go here: http://www.pantanal-pocone.net/en/pantanal/pantanal_klima.php -- source link
