For the first time in a long time, I woke up on a Monday without urgency, without a minor dread for the rigors of the coming day. For a long time this morning usually meant packing my heavy bag, loading myself for bear, plotting my routes and action items, planning the day’s offensives like an army general. Today’s freedom felt good. I drank in the wakeful neighborhood, a perfect May morning, relaxed on the border of cool and warm. It burbled with people starting their disparate days, on their way to meet promises: a father with his child on his shoulders; a man headed downhill on his bicycle, the edges of his shirt flapping behind him; college students in graduation robes, looking bleary-eyed and blinking in the early sunlight. Me, I bobbed through the streets, uncommitted, agendaless. The day stretched before me like a dog’s lolling tongue. -- source link
