Caño Cristales- Liquid RainbowThe Caño Cristales is a fast flowing river located in the Colombian province of Meta. It borders three large ecosystems; The Andes, The Eastern Llanos and the Amazon Rainforest. At the end of the rainy season (July through to November), the riverbed of the Caño Cristales explodes with a kaleidoscope of coloured blooms giving the river a rainbow like appearance. The colour can be attributed to a plant species know as Macarenia Claviera (Podostemaceae) which grows from the Quartzite riverbed. The plant is a form of riverweed and depending on the time of year and conditions within the river, can exhibit hues of pink, red, orange, maroon, yellow and green. Due to the fragility of the plant blooms tourism in the area is regulated by environmental protection rules so as to preserve this natural wonder for years to come.-ANPhoto credit #1 Mario Carvajal (with permission) http://bit.ly/1NtO0MIhttp://bit.ly/1FvAYAmPhoto credit #2 http://bit.ly/1MaEArKSourceshttp://bit.ly/1WVkW5Xhttp://bbc.in/1QldWQL -- source link
