This amazing shot by Tom Pfeiffer shows the violent eruption of the Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan on the 27th of September 2013. Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, erupting more than a thousand times annually. The cone of the volcano rises 1,117 metres above Kagoshima Bay and first erupted 13,000 years ago. In this image we can see jets of lava and ash streaming into the air. Also noticeable is lightning produced by electrostatic charges as a result of ash particles colliding; similar to the effect of rubbing a balloon on a jumper (at a much lager scale!).-Jean -- source link
