Shonique Thomas, is our latest Black Girl Killing It, see what she has to say…How would you define your personal style? This is probably my least favorite question, because I always feel like in “defining” my style, I’m unconsciously allowing others to put me in a box. I like being able to switch up my looks when I so desire. However, if I had to choose words to describe my general look, they would be: chic, ethereal, edgy, trendy, and urban.Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?I’m a combination of both. As an up and coming fashion blogger, I have to stay on top of the latest trends to be able to deliver current and relevant information to my readers. I’m also very experimental with my look, so if a particular trend appeals to me, I will embrace it. However, I don’t religiously embrace all trends, and even the ones that I do include in my wardrobe, I still incorporate my personality, so in that regards I also play by my own rules. Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?Hot pink is my least favorite color to wear - I tend to avoid it! If you ever so happen to see me in it, you will see it paired with a neutral color, a scarf, a chunky necklace, something to tone it down! I have no clue why, other than I just don’t think it’s my color, lol. When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind? The first thing that comes to mind is a beautiful, strong, confident, stylish, phenomenal black woman. She is independent and driven, and is “killing it” in every aspect of her life!Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?I’m my biggest critic. So best believe that when I leave my house, I leave correct! However, if I respect you and your style, I will give an ear to your thoughts. As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?I was definitely a “girly girl” growing up. I was always into my appearance; however, at that time it was just about matching! As I grew older, so did my interest in fashion. I’m definitely at the stage where I feel like I own my style.Do you participate in your local fashion scene?I currently reside in Gainesville, Fl, where the “local fashion scene” is practically non-existent. The best I can do is to get involved in the few fashion events that my school (University of Florida) hosts. How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?I’m very conscious of my appearance, and so I do like to look my best daily. I get a lot that I “dress up” everyday, and I suppose compared to most, I do; however, I view fashion as a means to express myself, and so I put thought into my daily attire. You won’t catch me wearing a mere jeans and t-shirt and on the rare occasion that I do, I either have a ridiculously busy day ahead or a day of studying in the library - then I opt for absolute comfort. What is your greatest fashion pet peeve? My greatest fashion peeve is definitely over accessorizing any outfit! Wearing chandelier earrings and chunky elaborate necklaces simultaneously - DON’T DO IT! Yes indeed, less is often best. What is your favorite trend right now?My favorite fashion trend has to be all the denim-wear right now: blazers, shirts, jackets, vests, and cropped jackets. Dark denim, light denim, distressed denim, acid wash denim, etc! Actually, I consider a denim shirt to be a closet staple right now. You can get so much wear out of them! Gives any outfit a certain umph!Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing? The closest I’ve come to sewing is embroidery back in Art class in high school. In terms of designing? Well, I’ve described my vision to someone and had her sketch it. I can’t draw, lol.Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?I can’t afford my favorite designers, lol. I’m absolutely in love with Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen, DSquared2, Anna Sui, and Yves Saint Laurent – their clothing stands out the most to me! I love the edgy meets glam meets chic look that their apparel always seem to embody. In terms of clothing I like to wear? I’m a major Forever 21 and H&M junkie! I feel like they bring the high fashion trends to your regular consumer at an affordable price.Your five must-haves as a girl: Nude Pumps/OxfordsLittle Black DressBlack Jacket/BlazerDenim ShirtConfidence! You can stay in touch with this BGKI on her Tumblr, Twitter or Facebook -- source link
