Tell us, Yugi-kun! ☄️ Moon Symbolism Perhaps the biggest symbol associated with Amane and Tsukasa is space. We can surmise that Tsukasa shared his brother’s deep love for it due to his excited reactions in the Picture Perfect arc. And Amane, of course, dreams of going to the moon. The moon is incredibly symbolic. Ancient myths surround it, it is used as a symbol in literature all of the time, and it continues to collect its meanings.  The moon follows a cycle, and that cycle represents to many the cycle of life: we live, we die. Our souls move on. The moon is connected to the tides, and the tides are attributed to our subconscious. The moon’s interaction with the world is commonly seen to portray one thing: what we see on the surface may not truly tell us what’s going on underneath. The theme of the moon and the subconscious is interesting paired with JSHK itself. The Picture Perfect arc has shown us that reality isn’t always what it looks like, all the way down to the lyrics of the anime OP mentioning it. Amane is a good actor. We should remember that. The moon is even thought to negatively influence human behavior: this is where the word “luna-tic” comes from. Superstition says that the moon causes heightened emotions and paranoia. The moon is paired symbolically with the sun, and the Yugi twins have been tied to the motif of the sun and moon. They represent a contrast: day and night, life and death. They can symbolize the two sides of human nature. Everyone has a good side. Everyone has a bad side. The sun and the moon loop right back to yesterday’s theme of yin and yang. The moon represents yin, and the sun yang. The moon and the sun are a twin brother and sister in mythology. They overlap each other and make the theme of life and death throughout the manga stronger. How does this relate to the Yugis?Amane wants desperately to reach the moon. Or, he did, but he gave that dream up in favor for staying right where he was. We don’t know why. All we know of it is ripped up astronomy pamphlets and a murder that was never supposed to happen.  The title directly translates to “earthbound” not “toiletbound”–Amane is quite literally earthbound due to his abandoned dream. The title refers to a jibakurei, a type of ghost that is tied to the place where it died. The twins will never leave Kamome Academy. What does this say about them? Is the moon only meant to represent Amane’s abandoned hope, or does it connect to the twins and the yin and yang symbolism present throughout the series?
