tiny-librarian:Princess of Wales is a British courtesy title held by the wife of the Prince of Wales since the first post-conquest Prince of Wales in 1301. There have only been three holders of the title who never became Queen Consort:Joan of Kent, the wife of Edward, the Black Prince. Her husband died before assuming the throne and she became Dowager Princess of Wales. Their son became king as Richard II.Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, the wife of Prince Frederick. Her husband also died before he could become King and she was also styled Dowager Princess of Wales. Their eldest son succeeded his grandfather and ruled as George III.Lady Diana Spencer was the first wife of Prince Charles. The couple divorced in 1996, but she contunued to be allowed to use the title until her death in 1997. -- source link
