Mazarine BlueToday we have another butterfly from the gossamer-winged, or Lycaenidae, family. The mazarine blue, otherwise known as Cyaniris semiargus, is a ghostly blue butterfly with black margins on the wings. The underwing is usually a chalky greyish color with black spots. This coloring only applies to the males, however, and the female mazarine blues are actually brown in color. This butterfly is Palearctic, which means that it can be found in one of eight biogeographic regions. The Palearctic region encompasses Eurasia and Northern Africa, but it includes many subregions. One fun fact about this species is that while it likes to congregate in meadows and grassy pastures, it seems to prefer areas that are unfertilized. Anyone living in the Palearctic region should remember this when they’re working on their garden!Image Source: Charles J Sharp, Wikimedia Commons -- source link
