miss-m-calling:Lady Enid Layard’s parure of chalcedony seals from Assyria and Babylonia, nearly 4000 years old, excavated by her husband Henry Layard in 1849-1851. The parure was commissioned for her by Henry on the occasion of their marriage in 1869. In 1870 she was painted wearing her unique jewelry by Vicente Palmaroli Y Gonzalez, while Henry served as the British ambassador in Madrid. The parure sparked a fashion for “historical” jewelry in Victorian Britain, and is now property of the British Museum.Ah, the good old days when finders keepers meant that you could gift your spouse with ancient artifacts you yourself plundered, and ethnic jewelry came with quite the pedigree. (Yes, I’m being sarcastic. It’s a lovely parure, though.) -- source link
