scarecrowcoffee:biorobo:scarecrowcoffee:Uploaded to Tumblr by requestA bit of background on what is being discussed here: I am upset that there must always be a battle to get female representation as well as healthy female relationships (romantic and platonic). This in particular is pertaining to the current Transformers comics.Isn’t this missing the forest for the trees a bit?Barber (who I’m listing first because HE is the one who was speaking about female character inclusion in interviews long before anyone else), Roberts, and Scott have only been writing transformers in the past few years. Before them there were 0 female robot characters that didn’t come with tons of baggage over their gender (Arcee). They’ve worked hard to start introducing them. But when the cast was ENTIRELY MALE for the entirety of IDW’s run, and all the established characters with important roles in the story are male….of course it’s going to be easier to make m/m pairs that are significant. When you try introducing tons of female characters in a relatively short period of time, it’s impossible to make them all fleshed out. Sometimes I feel like people complain no matter what they do. They introduce female characters slowly and develop each one (Windblade, Nautica and Chromia), people whine they are still only a few. They introduce a ton at once, people whine they aren’t significant enough…My initial frustration is that its always a “fight” to get ANYTHING to happen with female characters, in Transformers or in other media. If they are included in anything there always has to be a sort of “balance” with the male characters. Which will never make it equal. You don’t keep filling an already full cup when there are other glasses to fill.I appreciate all the hard work the writers have done, but I am still able to critique them on how they do it in hopes that they listen and consider it in their future writing. Of course there will always be critics on everything- personally I’m “complaining” because I care about these topics. With the introduction of the Camiens we honestly could’ve had some f/f relationships that were already established and became a part of the story. Windblade/Chromia was a missed opportunity- but I’m still keeping my hopes up for a healthy relationship with the new combiner team. Point is, in the fandom there doesn’t seem to be a loud enough voice for the fact that there are no f/f relationships in canon so far. I can’t help but still be miffed that the supposedly lesbian couple Roberts created wasn’t a part of the actual story somehow.I care about these robots in space. I make criticisms because I want the series to be better. I hate the “strong girls must fight at their first meet up” cliche too. That would be a huge disappointment to me. I am glad JRo didn’t throw in relationships that are unrelated to the plot just for the sake of it. The lesbian couple was brought up in a casual conversation, they are a normal thing, they showed that their relationship is considered normal, even nothing in the IDW TF universe. They are not a writer’s attempt to “HEY LOOK HERE I HAVE GAY COUPLE TOO PRAISE ME”. That would be disgusting. And I am glad there is an official platonic f/f relationship (Nautica/Firestar) started with a shaky foundation due to social discrimination, but worked out eventually because of mutual respect and understanding. -- source link
