questionabletastetheatre:So, a little while ago, Slate magazine wrote an article about Hannibal in which it claimed that “Will is a more interesting protagonist than Clarice Starling—or, for that matter, Will Graham in Manhunter. Clarice, while memorably brought to life by Jodie Foster, is too purely good to be all that engaging as a character.”I disagree. I wrote down why over at Strange Horizons, in A Thing That Lives on Tears: Goodness and Clarice Starling.”And the most overwhelming thing Clarice deals with (which is saying something given what she deals with) is the boys’ club of law enforcement. The movie is on her side; it sees that she’s surrounded by men who don’t take her very seriously. (The guy in the brown coat is Jack Crawford, who means well by her, as far as it goes, but who’s deliberately filmed giving her the cold shoulder an awful lot. That is not a frame of a man who is looking out for his trainee.)The bottom shot is the first time Clarice Starling stares down Hannibal Lecter until he looks away. It’s not the last; not by a long shot. -- source link
