beautiful-basque-country:Txantxangorria - RobinThis is the sign you’ll see in any business of the Basque capitals where Euskara is spoken. Many people say that they don’t hear much Euskara when visiting Gasteiz, Bilbo or Donostia, but there are basically 2 reasons:- euskara was banned during the 40-year-old-lasting dictatorship of Franco, so its use in the cities (where there were more policemen) decreased.- the cities welcomed more workers from other Spanish regions than the villages, and of course these people didn’t speak Euskara, and neither did their offspring. This led (and sometimes still leads) to that in many shops or bars, for example, shop assistants or bartenders couldn’t speak Euskara and, this way, Spanish was always used to avoid awkward situations. But fortunately, nowadays almost 100% of children are raised and study in Euskara, and many adult people are learning it, so this little bird is a sign for euskaldunak to speak freely in our language ^_^. -- source link
