isozyme: why do the writers of comics do this??? why do they think these splash pages have emotional weight? this is visual salsa. this is the narrative equivalent of an asmr sprinkle mixing video on instagram. this is a where’s waldo of superheroes. this is a cheerleading pyramid gone very wrong. my reaction to this isn’t “oh no my heart, the superheroes are fighting and it’s awful!” my reaction is “who the fuck is that? who’s that? oh hey i know that one, newfound comics knowledge win! now, where is iron man. why aren’t cap and iron man fighting back to back. fuckers.” it looked even stupider in film form, thank you, captain america: civil war. these fuckers are late to their flight and desperately want some overhead bin space. this is what happens when eight year olds catch a bunch of beetles in the back yard and then arrange them in the driveway to make them battle. this demonstrates worse strategic planning than five stoned jocks playing call of duty where half the casualties come from friendly fire. some behind the scenes vignette said that this fight was constructed to give them an opportunity for a splash page effect, and i ask you, russos: whyyyyy? why do you want this bad thing that will translate into a worse thing in this new medium? fanartists know how to do this: give us three or four panels of closeups where people have blood in their teeth and busted up knuckles. figure it out. -- source link
