The absence of any land masses allow the circumpolar current to transfer water between all oceans. Largely driven by the circumpolar westerly winds, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) encourages a mixing regime between surface waters and deep ocean waters, particularly important for gas exchange.
