We are just 8 days away from our Empty the Tanks protest in front of the Mirage Hotel and Casino. Temperatures are going to be soaring into the 100s this upcoming week. I ask that you please think about the dolphins trapped in the desert without any shade these next few days. A big portion of our campaign is asking for MGM to provide the shade that the Animal Welfare Act regulations state should be there. Jim Murren promised Ric O'Barry in the beginning of October 2014 that there would be shade provided in the next year. We are now in the summer of 2018. The only shade added has been for the benefit of the “trainers” who stand outside in the sun with the animals all day. These trainers have been caught on our recording saying they do not believe that the animals are in any danger from the sun. The only shade currently comes from the small trees planted around the edges which cover the pool briefly in the early morning or late evening. During the extreme UV hours of 11am-5pm, there is hardly any shade. Animal Welfare Act regulations state under 9CFR Section 3.103(b) Facilities, Outdoor, Shelter: Natural or artificial shelter which is appropriate for the species concerned, when local climatic conditions are taken into consideration, shall be provided for all marine mammals kept outdoors to afford them protection from the weather or from direct sunlight. You can help us out in a few ways: -Call MGM Corporate directly and explain why you will not be visiting The Mirage while they have dolphins: 1-(702)-891-1844 -Call the Department of Animal Care at the Mirage and explain that you believe the Animal Welfare Act is not being abided: 1-(702)-791-7588 http://mojavedolphins.com/the-pools/ -- source link
