Self-Portrait as Timanthes (c.1780-1803). James Barry (Irish, 1741-1806). Oil on canvas. National Gallery of Ireland.Barry depicts himself as the 5th century BC artist Timanthes of Greece, holding up a painting of the Cyclops and some terrified satyrs. Behind him stands a statue of Hercules crushing the serpent of Envy. Poised between these two mythical figures, Barry aimed to convey the professional isolation he felt. He died in poverty three years later. -- source link
