Massive Colorado LandslideThis collage shows a massive landslide that took place just over a week ago in Colorado on the edge of a flat-topped peak known as Grand Mesa.I’ve tried to give images that capture the scale of this slide but it’s really hard to express. The slide itself is about 8 kilometers long, over a hundred meters deep in the middle, and over ten meters deep at the edges. The little tip off to the side is a point where the slide actually jumped over a small ridge due to its massive momentum before diverting down the nearby valley. It took place following heavy rains that saturated the ground and probably created prime conditions for the slide. The area is fairly remote, but 3 people are missing and are presumed lost. The ground remains very wet in this area and local geologists have suggested further landslides are possible; so much of the area has been evacuated. The upper 2 images are before and after satellite photos. The lower left image shows the far toe of the slide where it comes up to a road; the lower right image is an aerial photo. To try to get a sense of the scale, look at the toe of the slide in the right hand images and then compare it in scale to the zoomed-in shot of the slide toe which also has structures in it.-JBBImage credits: Google/Digitalglobehttp://myfox8.com/2014/05/28/amazing-before-and-after-photos-show-impact-of-massive-colo-mudslide/Mesa County Sheriffs Officehttp://kunc.org/post/three-missing-after-massive-landslide-collbranhttp://www.latinpost.com/articles/13603/20140528/colorado-stops-search-3-men-missing-landslide-another-mudslide-coming.htm -- source link
