Eunice Kennedy Shriver was an amazing woman who started a camp on her farm that evolved into the Special Olympics. She was a pioneer in the struggle to improve and enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. She definitely had privileges that others didn’t, but rather than sitting around counting her money or crying about it, she used those privileges to level the playing field and change the world for the better. I often feel like it’s important to remind myself that I’m just a stupid white man who has no right to talk about anything other than being a stupid white man, and who needs to hear more of that story? But I hope that I’m at least doing something to make the world a better place, no matter how tiny (almost insignificant) it can seem in comparison to people like Eunice.
