ecobota:Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) laying on a bed of Acer platanoides (Norway Maple) leaves. November 24, 2015. My Backyard. Chester County, Pennsylvania. When I first moved to Philadelphia it was to take an internship at the Morris Arboretum. One work day we were weeding the Japanese Cloud Garden. I carefully dug a tiny seedling out of the ground and took it home. It lived on my stoop in a crappy plastic pot and people made fun of me for watering my stick. It didn’t really do anything for a few years. The leaves are naturally red (I have no idea what it’s parentage is since it was an open pollinated seeding from a garden of fancy cultivars) and they would get leaf burn and curl up every year by about July. Then this year happened. He kept all his leaves. They were robust and healthy. And I watched as last week they turned from a dull dark maroon color to BLAZING FIRE ENGINE RED.I’m sure there is some ugly duckling type moral here, but really I just wanted to show off my pretty leaf. -- source link
