niczka:The Marriage of Nellie Custis at Mt. Vernon - Washington’s Last Birthday, 1799. Detail. Painted by John Ward Dunsmore, 1909.According to Fraunces Tavern:“In the late 1790s, Congress approved a new military uniform, which they sent to George Washington. His step granddaughter, Nellie Custis, asked him to wear the new uniform on her wedding day, February 22, 1799. He gave her no satisfaction concerning the uniform as he was averse to wearing uncommonly decorated clothing. On her wedding day, she descended the staircase at Mount Vernon and found her step grandfather waiting at the foot of the stairs dressed in his Continental Army uniform.” -- source link
