When George Phillips was young his father offered him a choice between a horse and buggy or a high school education. Phillips chose education and when he graduated in 1907 he began teaching. Phillips worked hard and continued his education, becoming principal of Harriet Beecher Stowe School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1936. While working as a teacher he earned a BA, an MA, and in 1939, a Ph.D. in Education. In 1968, Phillips was awarded an honorary doctorate of pedagogy from the University of Cincinnati. In addition to George’s ephemera of a life in education, and a manuscript titled “My struggle for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree,” the George & Myrtle Phillips collection also includes diaries kept by Myrtle. The diaries chronicle her day to day life in Ohio in the 1930s-1960s. -- source link
