thatgirlwithadhd:colbycub:littlemonarch:My psychiatry professor says individuals with a higher IQ when children must be stimulated to develop it further or else they are more susceptible to develop anxiety and depression and also “falling off the curve”. And since as a child you can’t control the circumstances of your development, I’m sad to inform that your family and society have failed you. This explains…..so much I think it’s worth noting also that it’s not necessarily just a lack of stimulation. A LOT of high IQ people are also neurodivergent in some way, autistic, ADHD, etc. There are a LOT of reasons ND young people are more prone to depression and burnout, including: Chronic understimulationChronic overstimulation Repeated social rejection and isolation Statistically more at risk of abuse and bullying Trying to mask ND traits for yearsUnacknowledged learning issues causing academic struggles (many ND folks have a learning disability and even those who don’t can have huge struggles in some subjects due to uneven cognitive profiles, executive dysfunction, etc that often gets ignored/missed if they are “gifted”) Feeling like their ND traits are “laziness” or “being too sensitive” or their own fault for “not trying hard enough” (btw, living in an NT society as an ND person basically means you grow up with the whole world inadvertently gaslighting you because you constantly get told your struggles aren’t real and you could fix them just by trying) -- source link
