Psyche- The Goddess of the SoulPsyche has the distinction of not being born a goddess. She was the mortal daughter of the King of Miletus.According to Legend, Psyche was often thought to be as beautiful, if not more beautiful, than the goddess Aphrodite (the most beautiful being in existence). As a result, Aphrodite sent Eros to make Psyche fall in love with the first man she saw (or most hideous man she saw).However, Eros after accidentally pricking himself with one of his own arrows and fell madly in love with Psyche. He then abducts her and makes her promise to never look at his face, claiming that he is an ugly monster. She keeps this promise until one of her jealous sisters tricks her into looking upon Eros’ face, the face of a god. Eros, feeling betrayed, leaves Psyche and she is left to wander the Earth looking for him. Psyche later goes to Aphrodite and begs her to help find Eros. Aphrodite makes her a slave and forces her to carry out and perform embarrassing / humiliating chores and labours. Sort a massive pile of grain, rice, beans (she was assisted by an army of ants) Fetch a Golden Fleece that belonged to a ferocious and deadly Ram. (A reed told her to wait until night fall what the Ram was asleep)Fill a crystal vase with water from the waterfall of the River Styx. (An Eagle filled the vase for her)Go to the Underworld and return with Persephone’s beauty ointment.After returning from the Underworld she decides to open the box in order to make herself more beautiful. In doing so, she casts herself into a death like sleep until Eros arrives and wakes her with as kiss. In the end Eros and Psyche are finally wed. -- source link
