British Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer’s Sword for an Officer of the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regim
British Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer’s Sword for an Officer of the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) A Wilkinson ‘Medium Infantry Pattern Sword’ dating to 1866 and etched with the regiment and initials of William McNeile Cairns. The spine of the blade carrying serial number 14445, this sword was made for William McNeile Cairns of the 43rd Regiment of Foot, who had purchased his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in March 1863 and was promoted Lieutenant in May 1864. He served in the New Zealand Land/Maori Wars with the 43rd, receiving his promotion to Captain on 21st September 1872. Given that this sword was made in 1866, it is likely that Cairns purchased the sword after returning from New Zealand. -- source link
