hellyeahteensuperheroes:Black History Month Character of the Day: ShuriThe idea for T’Challa, king of Wakanda and Black Panther, to have a sister supposedly first appeared in an elseworld series Marvel Mangaverse with character T’Channa. It was…weird. Mangaverse as a whole was weird. Also, the writer is an asshole.Anyway, first proper appearance of Shuri in main Marvel Universe would be in Reginald Hudlin’s Black Panther #2-6 and she would then appear across the series on and off - issues #10, #18-20, #26-27 and #35-41. In the next series, she would become the main character, having to replace T’Challa as the Black Panther due to injuries he suffered in a battle with Doctor Doom. The series would get a follow-up in a miniseries Doomwar, where Latveria invades Wakanda, and the epilogue to that would be a miniseries Klaws of the Panther. Then comes stupid Avengers story where Thanos conquers Wakanda and Shuri was killed off-fucking-panel because Jonathan Hickman felt it’s more important to show a bunch of white guys talking his “big important science-fiction terms” or have Avengers punch one another instead. Fuck this story.Thankfully she would be brought back to life in the next Black Panther series by Ta-Nehisi Coates, where she would play an important role and getting a new set of powers, becoming a sort of mystical living history of Wakanda. In 2018 Shuri would become a fan-favorite in box-office annihilator, MCU’s Black Panther and later have small roles in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. The take on the character, making her a snarky, pop-culture savvy 16-years old tech genius, was widely popular and Marvel was inclined to make comics Shuri more like her big-screen counterpart. Science-fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor (who, btw, had a great speech about Afrofuturism on TED Talks, here is a link) took on the task in Shuri’s first solo series. She decided to take various interpretations of the character - movie’s young genius, Coates’ spiritualist and Hudlin’s younger sibling always in T’Challa’s shadow - and mold them all into one well-rounded character, showing these traits can exist in a single young woman and instead of contradicting each other, make her more multidimensional. The book sold well enough to continue but not well enough for Marvel to feel like investing in writers for filler arcs when Okorafor informed them, well in advance, her conflicting schedules meant she couldn’t deliver the next script on time. The series was canceled at issue #10 but Shuri would show in Ironheart #9-12, teaming-up with Riri Williams, while the two’s personalities kept clashing. Shuri would return in the current Black Panther series from issue #14 onwards.Shuri also plays a supporting role of varying importance in multiple Black Panther miniseries, including Black Panther vs Deadpool, Rise of the Black Panther, Black Panther: Long Live the King #3-4, Black Panther: Wolrd of Wakanda #1-4 and out-of-continuity Marvel Action: Black Panther.Shuri is also in animation, including Black Panther animated series, the fifth season of Avengers Assemble and Marvel Rising special Operation Shuri.- Admin -- source link
