Obit of the Day: DC Comics Cover LegendMurphy Anderson was one of the greatest artists of DC Comics “Silver Age” (1956-1970) helping to define the classic looks of Superman, The Flash, and Batman. Best known for his work with fellow artist Curt Swan (the duo were called “Swanderson” by fans) he gained a reputation for creating classic covers including premieres for Batman villain Poison Ivy (Batman #181) and the Justice League of America (Brave and the Bold #28). Mr. Anderson began drawing professionally in 1944 for pulp publisher Fiction House when he was just 18. In 1947 he was hired to draw for the nationally syndicated Buck Rogers newspaper strip, and stayed for two years leaving for DC in 1950.Hitting his stride in the early 1960s, Mr. Anderson earned Alley Awards, selected by comic book readers, in consecutive years from 1962-1965. It was during this time that he partnered with Gordon Fox to create the magician-hero Zatanna* who continues to appear in the DC Universe (and for a time on Smallville). Murphy Anderson, who also drew Wonder Woman for the cover of the premiere issue of Ms. in July 1972, died on October 22, 2015 at the age of 89. * Zatanna, who premiered in Hawkman #4, would cast her spells by speaking commands backwards.Sources: NY Times, Comicvine.com, and WikipediaImages, all copyright of DC Comics:Top left, Batman #181, the first appearance of Poison Ivy and courtesy of http://thevisualexegesis.blogspot.com/Top right, Zatanna’s first-ever appearance in Hawkman #4 and courtesy of zee365.wordpress.comBottom left, Brave and the Bold #28, the first cover appearance of the Justice League of America, courtesy of dc.wikia.comBottom right, Ms. magazine cover from July 1972, courtesy openroadmedia.tumblr.comOther comics-related posts on Obit of the Day:Carmine Infantino - Creator of The Flash and BatgirlJoe Kubert - Another DC Comics legendJerry Robinson - Creator of Robin and The JokerJoe Simon - Co-creator of Captain America -- source link
