mademoisellelapiquante: Girdle Books | 13th century - 16th century | This type of bookbinding was seen from the Middle Ages through the early Renaissance, becoming very popular during the 15th century. Found mainly in Northern Europe, particularly in the upper Rhine valley and the Netherlands, these books were bound with excess leather. This extra material was then knotted at the top and worn slung over a girdle. Sometimes, hooks or chains were used. Girdle books made personal devotions easier as well as showing off a person’s individual wealth and fashion. -- source link
