qsy-complains-a-lot:Mle 1856 ‘Arcelin’ Cavalry Musketoon with sword-bayonetManufactured by the Manufacture d’Armes de Châtellerault in France c.1856.Chambered for 12mm paper cartridges primed with an external percussion cap, bolt action with spring-loaded folding bolt handle, single-shot.The bayonet is 109cm long, or only 9cm shorter than the carbine itself, and features a double-fullered backsword-type blade ending with a false edge. The guard has three brass bars and a knuckle bow. When mounted this bayonet would allow the use of the rifle as a small lance for cavalry use.The Arcelin musketoon was part of the pet project of the Emperor Napoléon III of France to arm his personal bodyguard, the Cents-Gardes, with only the best of the best in terms of weapons and equipment. This lead to the early adoption of this rifle for testing, after which 108 of them were issued instead to the Dragons de l'Imperatrice, the 1st Carbine Regiment and the 1st Hussar Regiment.Words are failing me when trying to describe how amazing this gun is.A full-size sword at the end of a longarm seems impractical, but I still love it. -- source link
