Elżbieta Szydłowska holds the honor of being the mistress of the last King of Poland. Elżbieta was born into nobility, the daughter of Teodor Szydłowska and Teresa Witkowska. Elżbieta married, as his second wife, in 1768 to Jan Jerzy Grabowski, a Polish noble and Calvinist politician. There were five or six children born to Elżbieta while shewas married to Jan, all of whom had his surname, though it is generally believed they were the children of Stanisław: Konstancja (?) , Aleksandra (13 Apr 1771), Michał (c. 1773), Kazimierz (c. 1774), Izabela (26 Mar 1776) & Stanisław (1780). When and how exactly she met the king is not known, though assuming some of her children were Stanisław’s, we can guess it occurred sometime in the early 1770s. It is alleged that, following the death of her husband in 1789, Elżbieta entered into a morganatic marriage with the king (who never married otherwise).Contemporaries at the time say this was a story invented after the king’s death, spread by Elżbieta herself. During her lifetime, she was unpopular with the Polish people, who believed she used her position to influence the king during his reign. In 1795, Stanisław abdicated and moved to Grodno (under Russian control) until being invited to Saint Petersburg the following year. Elżbieta followed him there with her sons Stanisław and Michał.
