There are numerous accounts of young girls and women in the early Christian period that, for devoting themselves to the Christian God and remaining in perpetual chastity, were tortured and eventually executed by the sword. Some of them were Lucia of Syracuse, Catherine of Alexandria, Agrippina of Mineo, St Barbara, St Cecilia, St Agnes, Juliana of Nicomedia, St Margaret and some of the 40 Holy Virgin Martyrs. Other Virgin Martyrs died from their wounds from the tortures that were inflicted on them, in imprisonment or other forms of capital punishment. -- source link
