Centranthus ruber is in the family Caprifoliaceae. Commonly known as red valerian, it is native to the Mediterranean, but has become naturalized around the world including western Europe, Asia, and North America. Red valerian is a perennial shrub most often grown as a garden ornamental for its terminal clusters of showy red zygomorphic flowers. In contrast to its common name, red valerian is not related to the true valerian plant, which belongs to the genus Valeriana. Regardless, the roots and leaves of this species can also be used medicinally much like true valerian root. -- source link
