Elephant RockI was recently conducting fieldwork along the Taranaki coast and stumbled upon this amazingly weathered specimen of rock. Turns out Elephant Rock is actually a local tourist attraction with travellers from as far afield as Europe stopping to get a picture of this stone mammoth. However, wannabe photographers have to be careful as Tongaporutu beach is highly tidal; come at high tide and the elephant is inaccessible, stay too long and you’ll have to wait for the local rescue helicopter to collect you. This site is another reminder to check tide times when traversing an unfamiliar coast. While Tongaporutu may look like it has an extensively sandy beach the fact the coast dips very shallowly into the ocean means tides not only come much higher than expected but they come in fast. With there only being one or two access points along the coast you definitely don’t want to be caught short in your bid to get the perfect photo!WatsonImage Credit: Watson -- source link
