There is more to mountains than first meets the eye! We all know the story of the Titanic, how the captain was mislead to believe a small iceberg couldn’t harm his precious. Did you know that mountains just as well have huge roots lying underneath them? They extend earth’s crust well beyond the point where the crust below us swims on top of the earth’s mantle. Have a look at the picture! In part a) our mountain folds up by convergent motion of plates. This could be the Himalaya! Of course we have erosion of our mountain like in b) and bouyancy forces the root to move back up. But look at c) the root has grown to be denser than the surrounding crust and therefore does not quite move all the way back up.
