“Many people are not educated about actors in the deaf community. Sometimes I show up to auditions and there are no interpreters, and usually I’m fine with going along with it because I don’t want to create problems. I show up, do my thing, and fight it after I get cast, IF I get cast. But usually they don’t accommodate for us. Often the script is a speaking role, and many deaf actors have a hard time speaking, so the casting directors say ‘fuck the deaf actor’ and give it to a hearing actor who has no problem speaking. They cast teachers, lawyers, doctors, even murderers, and they give the deaf roles to hearing actors who pretend to be deaf. And that’s where I need to expose them. Deafness is a language, it’s a culture, and there’s a certain way to deliver the lines. Yes it’s a *disability* but it’s not by choice. There are many people who don’t understand that it’s not just a role that we play. There are a lot of good deaf actors, and yes, there are bad deaf actors. It’s the same as hearing- you’ll always have good and bad. But some people see one bad actor and think that we’re all the same. But no, they’re not the same. And I don’t always get auditions. They don’t promote deaf roles well enough and we don’t get audition notifications. I’m getting tired of that. It’s time to have deaf actors with no voices.” -- source link
