muspeccoll:Manuscript MondayThis week’s manuscript has a particularly close association with the University of Missouri. The author and scribe, one Richard Headen, was from Boone County and was one of the original donors for the founding of the University. The manuscript, the title page of which bears the title Richard Headen, his Cyphering, is a mathematics workbook, with a focus on arithmetic and commercial mathematics. It also includes a number of word problems, one of which reads as follows:A thief Breaking into an Orchard Stole A certain number of Pears, and at his Coming Out he met three men one after another, which all threatened to accuse him with theft, & to appease them he gave to the first half the pears he stole, who Return’d him back 12, to the second he Gave half, who Return’d him 7, to the third he gave Half, who Return’d 5, and in the End he had 36. I demand how many he stole.Any suggestions?- TimRichard Headen. Richard Headen, his Cyphering. United States: Richard Headen, 18–?. MU Special Collections Vault QA139 .H38 1800z -- source link
