3 of 5 of my Senior Thesis for MICA this Fall. I decided to do a series of Saint Portraits. Each of the portraits is a depiction of the individual Saint’s symbols. The Saint displayed here is St. Leo. There is some debate over St. Leo’s birth, wether he be of Russian Descent or of Tuscany. It is frequently written however that St. Leo was sent to Gaul to act as a mediator by Emperor Valentine III. Later, St. Leo persuaded the emperor to recognize the primacy of the bishop in Rome, and formed the doctorate of the Incarnation. St. Leo is perhaps best known for his conversation with Attila the Hun at the Gates of Rome, persuading him to turn back. In paintings or depictions of the saint. St. Leo frequently is depicted with two angels by his side, preparing to fight off the Huns. -- source link
