english-history-trip:english-history-trip:beau–brummell:The Cerne Abbas giant is an enormous chalk depiction of a muscly man holding a club and sporting an, uh, erect penis. Some think he might be as old as 2 AD, in the same vein as other ancient chalk depictions in England like the Uffington White Horse. Others question this, since he isn’t mentioned in historical record until 1694. Some think he might be a caricature of Oliver Cromwell. I’m not sure….it makes sense that he would be an ancient depiction, presumably to scare any enemies. But the fact he isn’t mentioned in the records until 1694 is suspect, the fact he wasn’t covered up by the Benedictine monks who lived here until the 1530s is even more suspect AND if you look closely, you can see the remnants of the medieval plough lines on him….which doesn’t make sense (I assume they would’ve been too frightened to plough on him if he’d been there then). Who is he!!!!
