my18thcenturysource: “Midshipman Augustus Brine”, John Singleton Copley, 1782 Seven year
my18thcenturysource:“Midshipman Augustus Brine”, John Singleton Copley, 1782Seven years after Copley arrived in England he was commissioned for this portrait of the son of Admiral James Brine of the Royal British Navy, Augustus, aged thirteen, who had just enlisted in the Navy as a midshipman under the command of his father.Eight years later he was made commander, fought in the War of 1812, and was later named rear admiral in 1822.As usual, I added details of the painting since this is SO beautiful: the metallic buttons (I NEED ALL THOSE GOLDEN BUTTONS), the detailed hair, the small shine in his eyes, the slight smile… I just love this portrait. -- source link
