thehumon:Paul isn’t an amazing movie by any means, but it’s definitely Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s most personal project. All their personal interests get to come out, like geek culture, aliens, the American south, atheism and sexuality. It comes the closest to what Pegg and Frost’s relationship is like in real life. At one point they even share a bed.Apart from the obvious threat of the government wanting Paul back, there’s also a running threat of religious fanaticism and homophobia. Clive and Graeme almost become victims of a homophobic hate crime just because they’re so close and don’t live up the ideal image of straight men. It’s not something Pegg and Frost talk about a lot because it would be taking a problem that’s so much worse for actually gay people and making it about straight men, but because of their close relationship they had to deal with a lot of bullshit, and it all comes out in this movie. It touch on the fact that men, no matter sexuality, has trouble being true to themselves and their needs because of homophobia. Some confuse Clive and Graeme for a gay couple and are supportive, other’s want to kick their heads in and as a result they understandably get nervous when people think they’re gay. Clive might be bisexual but has too much internalized homophobia to admit it to himself. The alien Paul has his faults and cracks jokes at inappropriate times but is overall made out to be close to the ideal. He’s crass but nice and always has good intentions. He’s a bisexual atheist who doesn’t discriminate against age or looks, as seen when he flirts with overweight Clive and elderly Tara. Originally he had a rant about humans’ fear of other sexualities similar to his rant about religion, but it was cut to make the movie less preachy (Pegg has a lot of feelings about both). Instead he casually mentions that his entire race is bisexual and has comfort “sex” with Clive when Clive voice some mild emotional/sexual confusion (It looks like a normal mind-link at first but Clive doesn’t panic like Graeme and Ruth did. Instead he slumps back relaxed and has a “post sex” cigarette. Doesn’t help that Paul talks about what he did to Clive like it’s sex)Also, Ruth is a treasure. Bless her and her newfound pleasure in swearing. So yeah, not at all a perfect movie but it’s an interesting look into Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s brains. -- source link
