bespokeredmayne:A novel actorSo many of Eddie Redmayne’s roles have started as characters in books — classics, best-sellers, biographies, fantasy, romance. For this World Book Day (there’s another one in April, in case you’re confused), we thought we’d take a look. And here’s a special, exclusive interview Eddie did last fall with Maria Suarez, a reporter for Time For Kids magazine, where she discussed his book-based roles and his reading habits with him:MS: Time For Kids really likes to encourage kids to read, so I would like to ask you some questions about reading. A lot of your movies were made from books like Les Miserables, The Danish Girl, Birdsong, Tess, Pillars of the Earth, and My Week With Marilyn. Is it hard to make a book into a movie because maybe people who have already read it may see it in a different way in their heads?ER: Yeah, I think that’s a really good question, and I think the answer is it is hard, and whenever I go into make an adaptation of a book, you always have to accept that it’s not going to satisfy everyone because for me, the time when I’m most moved is when I read a book because you’ve created those images in your own imagination, and no other person’s demonstration of that is ever going to help bend your own imagination and expectation. So whenever I do adaptations, I know it can’t be entirely authentic, but often the stories that are written in books are some of the great stories, and so I think they have value to try to tell them as well as you possibly can.MS: Do you think people should read books before they see the movies?ER: I would say yes, always. But for that same reason that I just answered I would say if you can, if you’re someone who enjoys reading, you are allowed to create these worlds in your own imagination, and I think that is something that is incredibly special.MS: How important is reading to you now? Do you make time for it? I see pictures of you reading on the Tube.ER: (Chuckles) Yeah. You know, when I’m working on a film, I’m always reading the script, a huge amount, and I’m always reading the research material around the script, and I find it very difficult to read anything fictional…occasionally I’ll read something nonfictional…So for me, it’s always on the holidays between. For example, after I just finished The Aeronauts, Hannah and I have been away, just for a few days….stole a few days…and then I’ve been reading. And so before I start reading work-connected with the next job, do you see what I mean? So those stolen moments of holiday are really for my reading. But I’m a slow reader, you know, some people read incredibly quickly. It takes me a while.Eddie and his interviewer: A reminder on this World Book Day 2022 of the importance of reading and literature to Eddie Redmayne (seen here on the London Tube reading The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff when he was prepping for that role:Eddie will have another film derived from a book about a real-life story, The Good Nurse, released by Netflix this year. It’s authored by Charles Graeber and co-stars Jessica Chastain in the compelling story of a serial killer unmasked by his colleague. It joins this partial collection:And here’s an updated photo of Eddie with his young interviewer, after opening night of Cabaret in London last November. She’s still a fan and inspired by him to read, enjoy theater and film…and create art! -- source link
