Eritrea, Ethiopia, 1952-1962Eritrea was an Italian colony at the Red Sea. The British and Americans preferred to cede Eritrea to the Ethiopians as a reward for their support during WWII and in 1952 the United Nations resolution to federate Eritrea with Ethiopia went into effect. The flag is based on that of the UN. It uses the light blue and the symbol of olive branches, but instead of a globe in the centre it shows another olive branch. From the start of the federation Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie attempted to undercut Eritrea’s independent status. Finally, in 1962 he pressured the Eritrean Assembly to abolish the Federation and join the Imperial Ethiopian fold, much to the dismay of those in Eritrea who favored a more liberal political order. -- source link
