Forty-seven enthusiastic participants, led by Patrick J. Donmoyer of The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, spent today hunting barn stars (also called hex signs) in Berks County. Without a cloud in the sky, the stars were perfectly illuminated. The bus trip was connected with Glencairn’s current exhibition, “Hex Signs: Sacred and Celestial Symbolism in Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Stars.” Barn star artists Eric Claypoole and Andrew Shirk came along, providing fascinating “color commentary” as we admired the stars. Many of the paintings we saw today have been restored by Eric, who began painting them with his father in the early 1970s. You can see some original barn stars “up close and personal” at Glencairn’s exhibition, which lasts until November 3rd: http://ow.ly/7JfF30nAwBu -- source link
