Second attempt at sculpting using polymer clay and first ever “face” sculpture - featuri
Second attempt at sculpting using polymer clay and first ever “face” sculpture - featuring my beloved Tyrant! He’s missing his fedora, blasphemy I know but I need a thinner wire in order to make it which I don’t have unfortunately… Couldn’t capture his likeness and his face is anything but symmetrical but ah well.. At least I have my very own mini Mr. X now HUEHUEH! The base looks like an absolute potato as well but at least it keeps him from falling over and that’s good enough for me.- Warning: A very long essay down below -After destroying a w.i.p of a horse sculpture due to me not having enough clay to finish it (sadly), I thought of making something smaller - preferably something that would use all if not most of the leftover clay as it got all crumbly and pretty difficult to work with. I started with a pretty crappy “armature” and thought of experimenting by making something that resembles a face, with no intention of it ending up as a finished sculpture. Then I remembered that I’d been planning to make an acrylic portrait of Mr. X for a while now but since I was low on required paints and said plan had to be kept on stand by, I thought why not try and make a bust or something. Long story short I got into it too late, crappy armature couldn’t get extended or fixed without destroying the entire thing, clay was TOO THICK (due to said crappy armature) and I was certain it would crack in the oven so I didn’t even bother to keep working on it or fix its issues..(I baked it for 5 hours and surprisingly it came out just fine - the color went from beige to lobster red as if he came out of a solarium, plus it had to cool down for an hour or so but still fine)And then the paint job, sadly acrylic paint is all glossy and “plastic-y” while the baked clay is matte and has a lovely rubbery feel to it.. I think an airbrush would be the ideal tool for a more even and matte finish but… I don’t have one (yet). Still got more coloring to do but I also don’t want to risk further filling in the wrinkles and whatnot.I’ll make sure to put him next to MAH BOi. Wherever the painting goes, he goes.Perfectly balanced as all things should be.. -- source link
