Welcome to the family, Juniper!Juniper is a greater hedgehog tenrec (Setifer setosus). It is the only species in the genus Setifer. They look a bit similar to the lesser hedgehog tenrec, but are bigger - roughly the size of a small pygmy hedgehog. They are said to be more active than the lessers but also have a bit of a reputation as biters, which seems to depend on the individual. So far Juni has been nothing but sweet despite the long, stressful trip home. I’ve been wanting this species ever since I got into tenrecs but they aren’t that easy to get. They pop up for sale here occasionally but most, if not all of them are wild caught since there are no breeders in my country. I prefer captive bred over wild caught for ethical reasons mostly - if a species can be bred in captivity, I try to avoid supporting the WC trade. So when I got the opportunity to take in Juniper, a captive bred September ‘18 baby, I couldn’t say no! Juni comes from a breeder in Germany and his/her gender isn’t 100% confirmed yet, but I hope to find out soon. Tenrecs have a cloaca so sexing them isn’t as easy as sexing most other mammals, and unlike the lesser hedgehog tenrec the greaters don’t have as much sexual dimorphism so you can’t rely on outward appearance as much. I’m very excited to be able to work with this species and can’t wait to discover more about them! -- source link
