The ORIGINAL BUZZLong before the Toy Story franchise made Buzz a hero, there was a real life space cowboy named Buzz who set fire the imaginations of millions of people around the world. On this day exactly 50 years ago, November 11, 1966, Buzz Aldrin took a space walk from his Gemini 12 capsule and took this selfie. Some perspective on what it took to get Buzz up there: this was the 10th and final mission of the Gemini program, the 18th manned space flight by NASA and only the 26th manned space flight ever, counting the Russian Roscom program. Buzz would spend a total of 5 ½ hours outside the capsule on this mission, docking with the Arena Target Vehicle. For many at NASA this was proof of concept training for the Apollo program and upcoming Lunar missions. But NASA did not waste the opportunity to conduct real science with over a dozen experiments planned. The 14 scientific experiments were: 1 Frog egg growth under zero-g2 Synoptic terrain photography3 Synoptic weather photography4 Nuclear emulsions5 Airglow horizon photography6 UV astronomical photography7 Dim sky photographyTwo micrometeorite collection experiments, as well as three space phenomena photography experiments, were not fully completed. -- source link
