Joyeux Anniversaire Monsieur BALDWIN………..No.1 Baldwin: Well, I’m going to ask you a question now: what happens in a society when those without privilege decide that they cannot endure their situation, and that there has always been open conflict, because people in power just don’t give up power. Now if I say anything about a bloody conflict, everyone will accuse me of agitating, and stirring up hate, and advocating violence. But I’m not the man who has the gun; I’m not the man who has the helicopters; I’m not the man who has the mace, the tanks, the policemen; I might be a terribly violent person, but nothing could be more irrelevant, you know, because I’ve got nothing to be violent with. But I know that I’m facing a very violent people; the most violent people at this moment in the world. It isn’t up to the black people whether it is violent or not, it’s up to the white people. Hall: And what do the white people have to do in order to avoid a violent confrontation? Baldwin: Something people never do. They have to love my child as much as they love their child; they have to decide that human life is more important than their profits, more important than their safety, and they won’t do that.
