madeleine92posts:Music - great passion of The Catholic KingOther important aspects of prince Ferdinand’s nature were religion and music. Both these things should be analyzed at the same time considering the fact both of them formed La Capilla Palatina of the prince. Confessors, preachers and chaplains undoubtedly had a hand in shaping Ferdinand’s personality, when it comes to the rules of the Catholic Faith as well as literature since many of those were great men of letters. His official preacher was Juan Marqués - a theologist by profession. One of his first confessors whose name, however, doesn’t appear on the list was Nicolau Ortolá, a Carmelite who accompanied the prince in 1464, 1465 and 1467. Certainly he was sharing his duties with Sicilian Dominican monk Gregorio de Prestimarco and with master Rodrigo de Sese who got the post of Ferdinand’s extraordinary confessor in 1472. Ferdinand’s music chapel was truly exclusive - according to the tradition of the Aragonese royal house. The chapel consisted of: the master of the said chapel, twelve singers, a group of four minstrels, seven trumpets and four atavalers. Members of the chapel often gave up their jobs, especially those that were playing trumpets - after their contracts expired, they would go on to serve others, being tempted by the prospect of higher salaries. Duke de Alba was a great rival of the king Ferdinand in this matter. Earlier John II and Joanna Enríquez were occupied with choosing members of the royal chapel however since the 1464, the prince himself took charge of it and thus he became a true music lover. Mateo Jimenez from Seville acted as the master of the chapel in 1473. Four years later, however, Ferdinand reformed the chapel completely, picking new master; Juan Urreda and hiring frair Antón Martin de Exea (tenor), Bartolome Aguilera from Toledo (soprano), Bartomeu de Castro (contralto), Fernando de Ocana (double bass) as well as singers: Pedro de Yepes, Pedro Gómez from La Rioja, Alonso de Sahagún, Diego de León, Francisco de Uceda, Antonio de Córdoba, Alonso Cortés and Lope de Buena - the last one was both a singer and a musician. On the list of his minstrels we can find: Bartolomeu Garçó, Juan Gaçó, Juan Ginés, Juan Breçull and Piere de Foix. Trumpeters were: Pere d’Abella, Rodrigo de Urso, Francisco de Cueva, Fernando Palomino, Diego de Pliego and Alonso de Montalbán. Group of theatavalers consisted of: Francisco Ximénez, Alonso de Briviesca and Cristóbal Negro.Ferdinand’s passion for music was constant. In 1483 he asked his ambassadors in Rome; Gonzalo Beteta and Francisco Vidal (the latter was a great humanist and functioned as Ferdinand’s tutor) for negotiating the contract which would allow him to bestow some ecclesiastical benefits upon chaplains and singers from his chapel on the territories of his hereditary kingdom.
