2011 in the old community garden, mid guerrilla pond construction. V built the pond by digging, hauling broken chunks of concrete and massively heavy pieces of found granite for the walls, lined with an old billboard. That’s actually me on the left, in my anti-mosquito Tyvek suit. I’m weeding among the native Coreopsis that were planted around the ‘Belle of Georgia’ Peach tree (that tree made the best peaches I’ve ever tasted in my life), and behind me is the mint patch, most prominently here is the Hoary Mountain Mint (the best pollinator plant I know). The area behind the pond we eventually planted up with native and non-aggressive tropical-looking plants as a lush pond-backdrop. In the foreground is a young hazelnut tree.We set up multiple rain gardens to slow down the water in rains, but we ran into problems with very aggressive grasses outcompeting and smothering the fuck out of the native plants we’d put in there. You can also see here the soil we were working with, mostly clay mixed with gravel and garbage. The pond was filled with cheap feeder goldfish and made people very very happy. -- source link
